What will I learn?

The Master's by research degree requires you to deepen your knowledge of your discipline area and develop advanced skills in the conduct of independent and sustained research. As a Master's by research candidate, you will undertake a supervised research project that culminates in the submission of a thesis for examination. Upon completion of your candidature you must demonstrate through your thesis that you have acquired an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in one or more disciplines.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 – Masters Degree by Research.

Career outcomes

Depending on your area of specialisation, this degree will allow you to pursue careers in a wide range of organisations and industries, including roles in the tech industry, the public health sector, and pharmaceutical industry. It can also serve as a pathway into a PhD.

Professional recognition

Entry requirements

The minimum academic requirement for entry to a Masters by research at La Trobe is a three year Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years with a weighted average mark in the final year of 65 or above. English language requirements: IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0. TOEFL Internet based (iBT): overall score of 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing. Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50. C1 Advanced: 176 with no less than 169 in any component. C2 Proficiency: 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

For international students

The minimum academic requirement for entry to a Masters by research at La Trobe is a three year Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years with a weighted average mark in the final year of 65 or above.

(i)Entry into the Research specialisation (19) will require applicants to demonstrate equivalence of the advanced knowledge and research training that is required for completion of a research thesis only, at the level of an Australian Honours degree, with the approval of the Board of Graduate Research.

(ii) Entry into a discipline specific specialisation (1-18) via transfer from a cognate Bachelor (Honours) at

La Trobe University will require a weighted average mark of 65 or above in the final year of that course.

The following conditions must be met in order to gain admission into a Masters by research degree:

the department or school in which you seek enrolment must be able to provide appropriate facilities, resources and supervision for your chosen area of research.
