What will I learn?

As energy storage becomes essential for grid stability, renewable integration, and efficient power distribution, this course equips engineers and technical professionals with the knowledge to navigate emerging storage technologies. The Professional Certificate of Competency of Energy Storage provides a comprehensive overview of storage technologies and their role in modern power systems. Students will explore mechanical, electrochemical, and advanced electrical storage methods, including pumped hydro, compressed air, lithium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. The course also covers battery integration, performance, safety, and grid-scale applications. By the end, students will understand energy storage fundamentals, emerging innovations, and practical implementation in real-world systems.Upon completion, students should be able to:Understand the basic chemistry of batteriesIdentify the advantage and disadvantages of using alternative battery typesUnderstand the figure of merits, energy, and power density limits of each electrical energy storage component typeExamine battery testing standards, battery charging systems and state of charge measurement techniquesLearn about hybrid systems using batteriesUnderstand safety and second-life use of batteriesLearn about a variety of applications such as automotive and grid-energy storage systemsThis course will commence by explaining the concept of energy storage and its significance in electrical power systems. Additionally, the working principal and applications of the main types of energy storage technologies, including mechanical, electrochemical and electrical energy storage systems, will be discussed to get deep understanding of the main characteristics of these systems. Adding to this, the integration, performance and safety of battery systems will be reviewed. Furthermore, some special types of energy storage, including chemical, thermal and gravitational storage plants, will be studied. Towards the end, grid scale energy storage systems will be discussed to investigate the significance of energy storage on a large scale within an electrical power grid.
