What will I learn?

This program examines human behaviour, institutions and culture in order to reveal and analyze the gender assumptions on which they are based. It examines the changing positions of women and men, gender nonconformity, queer studies, activism and the evolving understanding of gender.You will examine the portrayal of femininities and masculinities in advertising, news media, literature, art, music, pornography, religion and films. You will study the relation between biology and gender constructions, gendered patterns of language use, the role of gender in processes of identity formation and socialization and women's changing economic and political roles.Double Honours Programs may be taken in combinations of two subjects. In this program at least 36 credit units will normally be taken in each subject. For further details, please see the Academic Information and Policies section.Students who are admitted to a Double Honours program (Women’s & Gender Studies and another subject) must choose two disciplines and be advised in both subjects. Students must complete the Major 1 requirements for their first discipline and Major 2 requirements for their second discipline.The major average for the Women's and Gender Studies portion of a Double Honours program will be calculated using the grades earned in all courses eligible to be included in the Major 2 program requirements.
