The specialization in Creative Writing focuses not only on reading and studying works of literary art, but on learning how to create them as well. See the UW Calendar for the program requirements. The Department that includes, among others, Indigenous, Black, Asian, Jewish, Arab, and Global South scholars, creative writers, staff, and students, some with direct experience of living under colonialism and occupation, who specialise in Critical Race Studies, Genocide Studies, Settler Colonial Studies, Decolonial Studies, Black Studies and Indigenous Studies. Many of our members are antiracist scholars who strive for meaningful equity in their pedagogy. These areas necessarily entail critiques of settler colonial formations and of acts of genocide, both in the past and in the present.
