What will I learn?

Linguistics involves investigating language systematically, exploring how it is used in day to day life, and discovering how it is realized in the human mind. You will learn how to construct logical arguments through analytical reasoning, probe language behaviour with experiments, and apply linguistic insights in human health, language technology, and language teaching. The Department of Linguistics is part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Linguistics is the scientific study of language-a vital part of what makes us human. As linguists, we study the formal properties of language, how it evolves, and how it is used in social situations. And while linguists do work on topics related to specific individual languages, the ultimate goal is to understand the nature of language on a global scale. In so doing, we advance knowledge and the understanding of what it is to be human.
