What will I learn?

Overview

This program has an interdisciplinary focus, weaving together physiological, sociological and epidemiological perspectives on major health issues.

Public Health considers health from the perspective of communities—from a neighbourhood to national and international levels.

You will learn about the health status of populations, inequities in health, determinants of health and illness, strategies for health promotion, disease and injury prevention, health protection, and factors that influence the delivery and use of health services.

Individuals interested in this specialization will apply directly to Public Health through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre using application code DHU.

Career opportunities

Individuals trained in public health will be prepared to work in areas of operations, management, and planning in a variety of healthcare sectors and fields including:

Community health co-ordinator

Environmental health officer

Graduate studies in Health Science or professional programs (e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medicine or chiropractic)

Injury prevention specialist

Occupational health and safety co-ordinator

Public and non-profit sector administration and/or policy development

Entry requirements

For international students

Entry requirements may vary from country to country. Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to Canada Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

English language proficiency requirements

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall score of 6.5 with no sub-score less than 6.0
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): Minimum score of 85.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Minimum score of 58.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Internet-based test (iBT) with a total score of 83, and minimum scaled scores of Listening: 20; Reading: 20; Speaking: 19; and Writing: 20.
