What will I learn?

Chemistry looks at the atoms and molecules that make up the world and how they interact, combine and change. Our Chemistry programs offer study in analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry to help prepare you to use your knowledge of the processes of matter to create new substances or examine existing ones.Chemistry is the science concerned with the properties of atoms and molecules, of which all matter is composed. Chemistry is important for all aspects of the material world - food production the manufacture of medicines, textiles, and plastics energy production identifying environmental problems and remedies and understanding the workings of living organisms. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories. The Department offers courses and research in virtually every area of chemistry, from theoretical to hardcore organic synthesis, from spectroscopy of interstellar molecules to the shape of proteins in your body, from the crystal structures of ionic conductors at 1000 degrees C to the accumulation of mercury in the arctic environment.
