What will I learn?

With VIU's Bachelor of Science in Biology you can immerse yourself in exploration of the living world and gain the skills you need for a rewarding career in life sciences and related fields. Whether you're looking for a pre-med or pre-veterinary degree or you want to pursue marine biology or another discipline, a VIU Biology degree has a lot to offer you. VIU's BSc in Biology focuses on hands-on learning through small class and lab sizes. This approach helps you to build strong technical and analytical skills, which are essential for your future success. As VIU Biology undergraduate student, you can take part in cutting edge research that other schools offer only to graduate students. You can contribute to scientific inquiries and potentially be part of groundbreaking discoveries. You get the opportunity to make a positive impact by addressing pressing global challenges, such as disease prevention, environmental conservation and food security. You can take part in research led by expert faculty, and you can get funding for independent research. We help you apply for undergraduate student research awards from national programs such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC). And you can apply for internal VIU funding opportunities. The Bachelor of Science, Biology Honours emphasizes a "hands-on," integrative approach to learning. Smaller class sizes allow one-on-one interaction, fostering development of the student-mentor relationship. In addition, students in the Biology Honours program complete a comprehensive undergraduate research project, under the supervision of a Biology faculty member. Students expand their research skills through deep engagement in their chosen project.
