What will I learn?

Study the most fundamental aspects of nature in one of Canada’s largest and most innovative physics departments. In fact, Waterloo is ranked 1 in Canada for Physics in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2024. Join a program that fosters curious minds to question the smallest particles, the largest forces, and everything in between. You'll get the support you need to succeed (and maybe win a Nobel Prize like Waterloo professor Donna Strickland or be part of the team using images of black holes to learn about general relativity, like professor Avery Broderick). You'll benefit from award-winning teaching, 20 months of optional paid co-op experience, and the program’s ties to Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, which provide additional opportunities to get involved in research. Choose from a broad range of courses in applied physics, astrophysics, biophysics, mathematical physics, and quantum computing. Enrich your learning with lots of hands-on labs and tutorials. You’ll develop the strong quantitative and analytic skills that industry is looking for.
