What will I learn?

The program is research-oriented, consisting of didactic courses, original research carried out under supervision, and preparation and completion of a thesis. The Department of Dentistry offers the MSc and PhD in Medical Sciences degrees (see Medical Sciences) for post-DDS applicants or for those proceeding from a BSc or equivalent degree. Research may be carried out in a variety of dentistry-related disciplines for which faculty members in the department have active research programs. The Department offers the MSc in Medical Sciences program in the following areas of specialty: Dental Hygiene, Dentistry, Oral Biology, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, and Periodontology. The PhD programs are offered in Dentistry, Oral Biology, Orthodontics and Periodontology.

Entry requirements

For international students

The Department's minimum admission requirements are a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or equivalent plus an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.A master's degree is expected, but does not guarantee acceptance into the PhD program. Applicants without a master's degree may be considered for admission provided equivalency in prior relevant education and experiences as approved by the Graduate Studies Committee of the School of Dentistry.
