What will I learn?

You will carry out independent research leading to a significant advance of knowledge in your area of study usually leading to 2-3 lead-author publications in highly respected journals. Completion of the PhD degree generally takes 4-5 years.

Structure:

As a student in our PhD program, you will need to demonstrate the ability to carry out independent research leading to a significant advance of knowledge in your area of study. Requirements:

  • Classes: You are required to take MICI 5400 as well as any classes required by your supervisory committee, usually not more than one or two.
  • Journal Club: Attend weekly classes where you will present on cutting edge publications in your research area
  • Departmental Seminar: Attend weekly departmental seminar – minimum 80 per cent attendance
  • Seminar: Present three departmental seminars of acceptable quality
  • Thesis and oral examination: Produce an acceptable thesis and defend it successfully.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students will be considered for acceptance into the PhD in Health program only after completion of a Master’s degree from an accredited program. Applicants who have completed a research (thesis-based) Master’s will be eligible for the two-year residency PhD program and those who have completed a non-thesis Master’s program are eligible for the three-year residency PhD program. Cumulative GPA of 3.7 based on both undergraduate and graduate transcripts. For International applicants, an English Language Competency score of TOEFL >100 (Internet) or IELTS 7.5.

For international students

Applicants must have,

  • First-class thesis Master's degree or its equivalent
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3 in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing.

English language requirement:

  • A minimum score of 100 on the internet-based TOEFL (Academic iBT);
  • A minimum score of 7.5 on the IELTS;
  • A minimum grade of 'A' in the Dalhousie College of Continuing Education (CCE) English-language test.

The application deadline for September admission is Apr 01, January admission is August 31 and May admission is December 31.
