What will I learn?

The Department of Economics is pleased to offer a Master of Arts (M.A.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program. We also offer Agricultural Economics at the PhD level in conjunction with the Department of Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics. The Department has two streams in the graduate program Economics and Econometrics (EE), which places greater emphasis on theory (micro and macro), mathematics and statistical methods, and Economics and Society (ES), which places greater emphasis on how the distribution of wealth and power affects the socioeconomic and physical environment. The graduate program in the EE stream requires students to take more core courses in theory, mathematics and statistics, while the ES stream is more individually tailored to the students research. Applicants to the graduate program in Economics apply to one stream, and are not considered for admission to the other stream. Therefore, applicants are advised to carefully check admission and program requirements to decide which stream provides the best fit.Expected Duration - 4 years.

Entry requirements

For international students

The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the program.Admission decisions are based on the qualifications of the applicant as well as the ability of the Department of Economics and the University of Manitoba to serve the applicant's intended program of study and area of specialization.To be considered for admission to the PhD in Economics program, you must have a minimum of a Master's degree (or equivalent) with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent) in the last two years of full time university study (60 credit hours). You must also have completed the entrance requirements and the program requirements of an MA degree in economics or in agricultural economics equivalent to the University of Manitoba's.In exceptional cases, applications may be considered from students who have completed an Honours degree in economics equivalent to the University of Manitoba's. In these cases, the applicant will be required to fulfill the PhD requirements and all coursework requirements for the MA degree course-based route.
