What will I learn?

The Master of Arts (MA) in Anthropology is an interdisciplinary study of Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Sociocultural Anthropology, and Anthropology of Health subfields.After graduation, anthropologists find meaningful work in a wide array of areas, from government and large corporations, to NGOs and education.Our MA in Anthropology provides students with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of anthropological theories and research methods. Over one or two years, students deepen their understanding of a specific area of interest and demonstrate their ability to conduct original research by complementing their coursework with a major research project (one-year option) or scholarly thesis (two-year option).Many employers are interested in the skills and expertise Anthropology graduate students possess:Knowledge about biological, ecological, cultural and long-term historical factors that influence human behaviourTheoretical approaches and practical methods for enhancing cross-cultural understandingKnowledge of a variety of ethnic and cultural groups living in Canada and abroadSkills in social research, qualitative interviewing and fieldwork, as well as quantitative methodsExperience in both writing descriptive and analytical reportsThe ability to analyze the root causes of social problems, and to work towards solutions with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

Entry requirements

For international students

The University requires, as the major indicator of ability to complete a Masters program successfully, the holding of an Honours bachelors degree with at least a Bplus average (equivalent to a McMaster 8.5 GPA out of 12) in the most current 20 half credit courses in the discipline, or relating to the discipline, in which the applicant proposes to do graduate work.
