What will I learn?

In the French Department, you will be able to:choose your specialization from among the set of theoretical approaches in one of the following three fields of research: French-language literature (literature from France, Quebec and French Canada as well as the rest of the French-speaking world: Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa, Antilles, Belgium, etc.), language and discourse (diachronic study of the French language, grammar, writing, discourse analysis, rhetoric and stylistics) and literary creation .complete a Masters degree in French Literature with a specialization in either Womens Studies or Medieval and Renaissance Studies, as well as a PhD in French Literature with a specialization in Canadian Studies do your doctorate jointly to obtain two degrees, one from the University of Ottawa and one from a foreign universitywork in seminars with small numbers (ten students maximum)benefit from the availability of our twenty or so professors, each of whom only supervises a small number of thesesobtain research and teaching assistantships, experience that will be valuable on your resumepresent communications at conferences organized by and for graduate students.

For up-to-date information regarding deadlines, language tests and other admission requirements , please visit the Special Requirements page .All candidates must hold a bachelor's degree with specialization, or a bachelor's degree with a major, either in French literature or in French Studies or the equivalent obtained from an accredited university, with an average of at least 70% (B).The candidate for admission to the field of literary creation must also present a file of texts representative of his or her writing.In some cases, a candidate will instead be admitted to a preparatory program. This program will aim to provide the training required to pursue master's studies in French Literature. Having successfully completed this program with an average of 70% (B) or more, the candidate will be able to apply for admission to the master's program.
