What will I learn?

The MA Thesis-based program requires registration in a combination of optional and core coursework in research design, theory, and methods, followed by thesis research in an area of interest to you. This program is suitable for students who are interested in sociology and criminology.Students must complete the online INT D 710 course in their first term to meet the Ethics and Academic Citizenship Requirement, and are also required to fulfill a Professional Development requirement to help you recognize your talents, pursue your interests, learn professional skills and make connections that will help you excel in your chosen field.The time required to complete this program will vary according to the previous education of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken, but typically students will take a minimum of two years.

Entry requirements

For international students

The Department's minimum admission requirements for the course-based and thesis-based MA programs in sociology and population and life course dynamics are a four-year undergraduate degree with a major in Sociology (honors preferred), or a related discipline, and a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in the last two years of undergraduate study at the University of Alberta (20 single-term courses), or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
