What will I learn?

In this program, you’ll pursue mathematics research in the broad areas of applied, discrete, or pure math. Your education will be supplemented by coursework and regular seminars. The sum of your research will be a thesis that will advance the field of mathematics. You’ll defend this final work in an oral examination that will prove your mastery of mathematics.OutcomesGraduates with an MSc in Mathematics will be able to:apply to enrol for doctoral studies in mathematics, meet the universal need for graduates with analytical and problem-solving skillsapply problem-solving skills in a variety of settings, assist in developing predictive models in areas related to climate change, epidemiology, etc.apply their skills to study and model risk and analyze related data for insurance companies, study and predict the sales of products and services as a market analyst or researcher, teach math in secondary schools and some post-secondary collegesGet an edge for any careerIt's an understatement to say that high-level math and statistics are used in every field of science and social science. In a world suffering from an overload of data, it is the mathematicians who find relationships and patterns invisible to the naked eye. A growing number of students are drawn to our subject, either for its intrinsic beauty, or to combine it with their studies in another discipline. In any case, Mathematics and Statistics at UVic gives undergraduate and graduate students an edge, whatever their future career. And for students interested in pursuing our subject, Mathematician was named the best job of 2014, and Statistician the third best job.
