What will I learn?

The Department's focus areas of research, each of which includes experimental, observational, computational and theoretical components, are the following:

  • Astrophysical Sciences: astronomy, cosmology, general relativity and black hole physics, computational plasma physics, fusion, laboratory plasmas, magnetic confinement, auroral, magnetospheric and space physics, radiation belt physics.
  • Condensed Matter Physics and Material Science: biophysics, dynamic processes at surfaces, electron and scanning probe microscopy, high Tc superconductivity, magnetism, nanoscale physics, phase transitions in porous media, ultrafast laser spectroscopy, ultrafast microscopy.
  • Particle Physics: high energy particle physics, particle astrophysics, nuclear astrophysics, string theory and supersymmetry, precision tests of the standard model. (Experimental work is conducted at CERN, Fermilab, Sandia, TRIUMF.)
  • Geophysics: fluids in porous media, geodynamics, magneto-telluric methods, paleomagnetism, rock magnetism, rock physics, seismology.

Program Requirements

A supervisory committee of three faculty members is appointed for each graduate student. Within the first year of registration in the program, the committee makes a formal recommendation on the candidate’s potential for graduate work. At this time students may in certain cases be permitted to transfer directly to a PhD program if their progress should warrant such a transfer.

Length of Program

The time required will vary according to the previous training of the candidate and the nature of the research undertaken; however, an average of two years is normally required to complete the MSc program.

The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years

Program extensions may be granted in exceptional circumstances.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants are normally required to have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta. An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required. English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5, with at least 5.5 on each test band; Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - 61 with a minimum band score of 60.

For international students

The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree in physics, engineering physics, geophysics or an equivalent program with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution.

English language requirement:

  • TOEFL: total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent;
  • Academic IELTS: 6.5, with at least 6.0 on each test band;
  • CAEL: overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest;
  • PTE Academic: 61 with a minimum band score of 60.

March 31 is the last date to submit an application for graduate admission in Physics.
