The Discipline of Anaesthesia offers supervision in a wide area of medical interest. To pursue a Structured PhD degree, potential candidates should discuss the matter with the Head of Discipline.Anaesthesia is centrally involved in both clinical and basic scientific research. Active areas of basic/translational research include the study of gene and stem cell therapies for ALI/ARDS and myocardial preconditioning. Active clinical research programmes exist in the investigation of the utility of medical devices, particularly devices used in regard to the airway and in regional anaesthesia and the management of acute postoperative pain.Anaesthesia has an growing involvement in teaching and learning, with particular emphasis on the following groups: Undergraduate second, third and final year medical students medical and surgical interns and senior house staff postgraduate medical trainees in Anaesthesia postgraduate Higher Diploma Nursing students in Intensive Care, Peri-operative Care and Emergency Care.
