What will I learn?

Welcome to the Centre for European Studies, in Trinity College Dublin, established in 1987. The Centre for European Studies is an administrative umbrella coordinating the contribution of the Departments of French, Germanic Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Russian and Slavonic Studies (including Polish), History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology and Near and Middle Easter Studies to its interdisciplinary undergraduate programme. The Moderatorship in European Studies is a full-time four-year undergraduate course of study, which is broad in focus, covering the continent of Europe from the Renaissance to the present.

The Centre welcomes applications for postgraduate research Ph.D. level from suitably qualified applicants, in disciplines areas under the European Studies umbrella, and in particular where the proposed research has a cross-disciplinary focus.

Entry requirements

For international students

Postgraduate work in Trinity College Dublin is very academically challenging and as a result the University has high academic entry requirements. Applicants will need to hold at least a 2.1 honors degree from an Irish university or equivalent result from a university in another country; a fluent command of the English language. Display a high level of competence in the English language in one of the examination systems recognised by Trinity College Dublin.

English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS: Grade 6.5 overall
  • TOEFL: 88 internet-based, 570 paper-based, 230 computer-based
  • University of Cambridge: Proficiency Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2), Advanced Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE Academic: a minimum score of 63 to be eligible (with no section score below 59)
