What will I learn?

Textiles span everything from design for fashion and interiors, to industrial products and gallery exhibitions. Learn to innovate in material, pattern and surface design, and consider environmental, social and cultural challenges.Textile design has the potential to lead to outcomes in fashion, interior, sports, health and arts sectors. Develop skills in digital textile design, colour, texture, pattern, and material innovation. Gaining specialist knowledge of print, dye, knit, weave, and non-woven textiles, means you can design and make your own contemporary textiles.We prepare you for a rapidly evolving world by helping you to develop your own research and design approaches in response to current global design challenges.Massey provides an intellectual and creative environment, encouraging critical debate. You'll be positioned to make your own choices about the design and manufacture of your own textiles. This could include questioning values of sustainability and ethical production by challenging dominant modes of textile production.Textile design research at Massey has particular strengths in:interdisciplinary research at the intersection of Matauranga Maori and scienceoptimisation of plant dyes and innovation with muka fibresvisual and participatory artsmaterial innovation with industry partners.We have excellent links with the textile industry in New Zealand and internationally. Staff regularly collaborate with industry to develop new fibre blends, and foster design innovation in manufacturing. These collaborations evolve into connections that our students can use for work experience, postgraduate study and employment.
