If you’d like to develop your skills and knowledge to communicate independently in familiar, and some less familiar, aspects of te ao Māori, this is the programme for you. You’ll gain language skills and knowledge that will provide you with a broad understanding of how the language is connected to the land, environment, prominent places, people, histories and stories. You’ll also extend your understanding and application of knowledge in varying contexts and begin to develop your independent production of the language. This course provides a pathway to contribute to community and cultural roles, such as: preparing a whare and/or marae for hui, kaiwaiata, and working in the marae kitchen and dining room, speaking te reo in homes within whānau and communities, role-modelling the use of te reo among whānau and hapū in a range of settings. These skills and opportunities are embedded in the teaching approach where engagement with local marae and culturally immersive experiences are at the forefront. Course delivery combines in-classroom and local marae-based experiences. The inclusion of marae provides an authentic, meaningful engagement with local Māori communities, ensuring that mana whenua are known people and retain the role of representing themselves.
