What will I learn?

The New Zealand Diploma in Business Level 5 Leadership and Management strand allows you to launch your career in management with the operational skills to lead the charge in business’s daily functions.

You will learn the fundamentals of business operations covering leadership, human resource management, law, Treaty of Waitangi and more. In addition the applied teaching method will provide a safe environment to develop essential employable skills including effective communication, collaboration and team work across mediums, problem solving and decision making. This programme has been developed in collaboration with industry to ensure graduates have employable skills for the New Zealand business environment.

There is more to management than being a good leader. It means having an understanding of the complexities of management processes, planning, and the New Zealand business environment.

Advance yourself – gain the tools to motivate, engage, make a change, achieve objectives, manage workflows and ensure you are meeting all your necessary legal and organisational requirements as a manager.

Aims of Programme

This programme aims to prepare students with a general and specialised business knowledge and skills that can be applied in a range of operational roles.

Graduates will be prepared to contribute to the achievement of business operational objectives, through the application of knowledge and skills, in an ethical manner and in a bi and multi-cultural environment. In addition, graduates will have specialised knowledge and skills for application in operational roles in New Zealand business entities.

Open entry for any person over 20 years

Recognised as the first year of the Bachelor of Commerce (Management or Marketing major)

Use recognition of prior undergraduate study, or extensive work experience, to skip courses you already hold the necessary skills and knowledge in.

Study face-to-face on our Nelson or Marlborough campus, or study completely online through the TANZ eCampus online learning platform (find out more)

Be awarded an additional strand by completing the four specialist courses in accounting, administration and technology*, Marketing and Sales*, Human Resource Management*, Project Management*(* Delivered via TANZ only)

Structure

Study full time over one year (two semesters plus study breaks). Courses are run on our Nelson and Marlborough campus. Alternatively study full time over one year online via TANZ eCampus (four terms plus study breaks).

Career opportunities and study pathways

Graduates will be qualified to work in a range of entry level management positions, and entrepreneurial enterprises.

Graduates can progress onto the Bachelor of Commerce majoring in management or marketing after successful completion of the New Zealand Diploma in Business (level 5) Leadership and Management strand. This programme is recognised as the first year of the Bachelor of Commerce leaving only two years of full time study to graduate with a bachelor’s degree.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students must have equivalent entry to New Zealand NCEA Level 1 or 2. English language requirements: IELTS: Academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5; TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18).

For international students

Academic Requirements:

  • A minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the Directory of Assessment Standards, and
  • Fifty credits at level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of 8 literacy credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori; of which 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing.
  • The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards found on the NZQA website at Literacy requirements for University Entrance.
  • or equivalent to the above.

English Language Requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have:

An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 issued within the last two years, with not less than 5.5 in any category.

or

A test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 60 in the computer-based test (with a writing score of 20), or at least 550 in the paper-based test (with an essay score of 5 TWE), issued in the last two years.

or

A qualification equivalent to the above

or

Complete two years study at a New Zealand secondary school and achieve either NCEA Level 3 or New Zealand University Entrance or both.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
