What will I learn?

The SMU Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Asian Urbanisms is a two-year research Master’s programme. It integrates rigorous coursework with a research component. The coursework brings students to the frontier of urban studies tradition, combining taught and research components so that students are equipped not only with knowledge, but also the ability to develop new understandings of how we can tackle complex urban problems. While the thesis gives students the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of the research frontier.MPhil students are given flexibility in the way they organise their coursework and the writing of their thesis over the two years of the programme to best fit their objective, be it to continue their studies with a PhD or to enter the labour force upon graduation.The curriculum consists of 8 credit units (CUs) of core courses and elective courses, and 12 CUs of a Master’s Thesis.

For international students

For MPhil in Asian Urbanisms:

Bachelors degree in a related discipline (such as, but by no means limited to, urban studies, architecture, urban planning or urban geography), from a reputable undergraduate programme with excellent academic performance.

  • Some applicants might be invited for an interview with the admission panel
