What will I learn?

These questions have big implications for which stories and voices are prioritised and which are neglected in the world we live in. Within a media landscape that is constantly changing, and where we can access media everywhere, these questions become particularly important for those who want to understand the media and those who would like to work in the media. The transferable, critical and technical skills learnt on the course prepare students for post-graduate study, work in the media industry and in many other sectors. As a student you will be given the space and freedom to explore and develop your own research and professional interests which will allow you to develop confidence and a clear focus for your next steps. You will learn about how the media industries construct and depict stories and the impact this has on our understanding of media production practices, representation, identity and culture. You will understand how audiences come to those stories, how they understand them and why.Alongside these critical skills, you will also develop technical skills across a broad range of media forms, such as television, radio, photography and digital. We don’t want you to learn these skills in isolation from each other. Rather, we invite you to combine research and production skills to use your own media content creation to explore those issues creatively. Through your work you will address current societal issues, emergent media forms and platforms, and think about the history, present and future of the media industry.
