What will I learn?

Our research activities are centred around two clusters:Our Practice-Based Research and Media Ethnography research cluster supports our highly innovative and ground-breaking methodological innovation in the development of songwriting, sound production, community music and broadcast-related practice-based researchOur other, general cluster conducts research in more standard (but no less important) forms across interests including gender studies and music, musical entrepreneurship, musical materialities, music pedagogy/education, liveness and music, musical heritage, and musical DIY practicesWorking with the UWS Protracted Crisis Research Centre and the UWS Creative Media Academy, we focus on research that involves communities and we undertake research in partnership with third sector organisations, public bodies, industry organisations and international artists as well as many other institutions.Much of our work focuses on areas of great societal concern including the climate crisis, equality and diversity, health and wellbeing, and issues related to criminal justice. As a body of practice-based researchers, we are experts in cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Entry requirements

For international students

The minimum entry requirement for registration to the degree of MRes, MPhil, or MRes/MPhil with the intention of transferring to PhD is a first or second-class Honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent qualification. Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis, taking into account the nature and scope of the proposed programme of work.
