What will I learn?

UCL’s Environment and Sustainable Development MSc equips you with the clarity, skills and agency to tackle socio-environmental challenges and work towards more equitable, sustainable urban futures. Through interdisciplinary learning, hands-on fieldwork and collaboration with partners, you grow as a reflective development practitioner, ready to support environmental justice and foster change in the Global South and beyond. At a time of accelerating environmental degradation, displacement and inequality, the Environment and Sustainable Development MSc equips you with the knowledge, skills and tools to shape more sustainable and just urban futures in the context of climate change and uncertainty. The course bridges theory and practice to challenge dominant development paradigms and highlights the vital link between human health and ecological integrity. With a focus on urban settings in the Global South, you take an interdisciplinary approach that draws on feminist political ecology, environmental justice and systems thinking. Throughout the course, you engage with contemporary environmental challenges from multiple perspectives-including nature-based solutions, climate adaptation, sustainable infrastructure, food systems, and environmental governance-while deepening your understanding of the dynamic relationships between urban and peri-urban areas. A key component of the course is the overseas practice engagement, where you collaborate with communities and partner organisations to address real-world issues, honing your skills in teamwork, communication, and co-production of knowledge. Additionally, development workshops offer hands-on experience with planning challenges, helping you build competencies in negotiation, strategic thinking, and stakeholder engagement. Ultimately, you connect with leading thinkers in the field and join a global community of practice committed to justice and sustainability. The Environment and Sustainable Development MSc brings together a diverse international cohort with backgrounds including but not limited to planning, geography, natural sciences, engineering, anthropology, economics, politics, communication and architecture. We welcome applications from professionals working in urban contexts in the Global South, as well as from recent graduates who are strongly motivated to explore new approaches to environmental justice and sustainable development. This diversity of experience and perspective fosters a rich, collaborative, and multidisciplinary learning environment-crucial for tackling the complex challenges facing urban and environmental systems today. This programme is also available on a modular (flexible) basis, with a duration of 5 calendar years.
