What will I learn?

Our four-year integrated PhD Psychoanalytic Studies follows the MA Psychoanalytic Studies for year 1 before beginning the PhD study programme within the department in year 2. Our four-year pathway in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies for the PhD Psychoanalytic Studies degree provides you with training to develop the research mind-set for PhD studies and our research and teaching is deeply grounded in knowledge deriving from clinical practice, to which our highest standards of academic thinking are then applied.We offer research supervision in the following fields:child developmentconceptual analysiscreativitygendergroup and institutional dynamicshistory of psychoanalysis (including Jungian analysis)Jungian thoughtphilosophical issues in psychoanalysispsychoanalysis and the artspsychoanalysis and educationpsychoanalysis and religionpsychoanalytic methodology in clinical and non-clinical fields, especially politics and sociologypsychoanalytic theory (eg Freudian, Kleinian, Jungian, object-relations and group theory)psychosisrefugee studiestrauma and violenceOur graduates go on to a number of different destinations, including further study and training in psychoanalysis, Jungian analysis, or psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Many of our students are already professionals, clinical and non-clinical, so return to their existing fields, either in jobs or further training, and use their time with us to deepen their understanding of their work.

Entry requirements

For international students

A 2:2 degree or international equivalent in any subject.

With your online application you must submit a personal statement; this should detail the reasons for wanting to study the course, including any relevant experience (work or voluntary) that may support your application.

Our four year integrated PhD allows you to spend your first year studying at Masters level in order to develop the necessary knowledge and skills and to start your independent research in year two.
