What will I learn?

Our LLM in International Law and Global Challenges focuses on the issues facing today's international lawyers. You will study the complex and dynamic nature of the international legal system and its role in foreign affairs.

About this course

This course is one of four taught law courses (LLM) we offer and is suitable for graduates of any background. It is ideal if you’re interested in gaining a better understanding of how the law shapes and influences international affairs.

It will give you the knowledge, insights and practical skills to enhance your career in practice, the public, private or diplomatic sectors or academia. If you are pursuing another career path, it will enhance your understanding of how the law shapes and influences international affairs.

You will study contemporary issues in public international law. You will develop your knowledge and expertise in:

international dispute settlement
international organisations
the role of individuals in the international legal system

You will also learn a variety of legal-specific research skills through our Legal Research Skills and Methods module.

You can create your own specialised programme of study that matches your legal interests and career aspirations. You can choose from a wide range of optional modules to complement your core studies, including:

the role of law in international affairs
diplomacy and dispute settlement
human rights law
international crime
the protection of foreign investment

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Students should have a four-year bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA ranging from 2.8 to 3.2 out of 4.0 (admissions criteria will vary depending on which course they are applying to).

For international students

A 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in law or any other subject. We will also consider applications on an individual basis if you have lower or non-standard qualifications or experience in professional legal practice. English Language Requirements - IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.5 in writing, and 5.5 in all other sub-skills).; TOEFL 90 overall (with a minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking, and 22 in writing).; Pearsons 62 overall (with a minimum of 61 in writing, and 51 in all other sub-skills)..
