What will I learn?

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is a great place to undertake your postgraduate research. We presently have over forty research students, from the UK, mainland Europe and around the globe, carrying out PhD or MA work on topics as diverse as translation, literature, theatre, cinema, and photography.Our research ranges from medieval manuscripts to modern media, including film and photography. Many of our researchers are world leaders in their fields. Particular strengths include:literature and culture from the Middle Ages to the present day, across our eight language areasvisual culture (film, photography and art)digital, environmental and medical humanitiesmusical culture and performance artsgender and sexuality studiescultural, political and intellectual history translation studies

Entry requirements

For international students

Masters degree from a recognised University.

If you intend to study for the PhD and do not already hold a Masters degree (or equivalent), you will normally be required to register for one of our Taught MA or Research MA programmes, which are designed to function as research training degrees, and offer the best possible introduction to higher research in the Faculty and our Departments.
