You can specialise in the fields of applied and environmental biology, tackling real world challenges. We invite proposals for MPhil or PhD environmental sciences projects in the fields of applied and environmental biology. We conduct research on organisms and processes of commercial and environmental importance. We embrace experimental approaches that encompass:genomicsmolecular biologybiochemistryphysiologyOur research provides evidence for the underlying molecular and physiological processes that affect animal behaviour and physiology. Our research is inspired by the drive to solve global challenges in health, food, energy, and water security. This is done through the development of innovative biological systems. With a strong focus on real-world application, this has led to the launch of successful spin-out companies, such as Geneius. This contributes to the local economy but also offers graduate employment opportunities. The commercial applications that result from our research range from natural products discovery and creation of novel antimicrobials and biopesticides to sustainable methods of reducing food spoilage.
