Examine how language shapes meaning, identity and society. Join a diverse community exploring how we use language and what it reveals about culture. We offer research supervision in a wide range of subdisciplines of English language and linguistics. We welcome projects on any variety of English and are able to supervise the description and analysis of a range of languages. Areas of study We particularly welcome applications in the areas of: descriptive grammar (including typological approaches) and/or theoretical syntax discourse analysis (especially political and media discourse, discourse of identity, corpus linguistic approaches) language variation and change morphology, phonology, orthography pragmatics (including intercultural pragmatics and im/politeness) semantics, lexicology, (meta)lexicography stylistics. For an MPhil, your work is an independent piece of research but in less depth than for a PhD. You’ll graduate with the degree title Master of Philosophy. You might be able to change to a PhD while you study for an MPhil.
