What will I learn?

The programme offers students the opportunity to undertake research that makes an original contribution to the field of mathematics and its applications. Students can choose from a broad range of research areas, including combinatorics, control theory, discrete mathematics, financial mathematics, game theory, graph theory, mathematical optimisation, machine learning, mechanism design, operations research, probabilistic analysis, theory of computation and algorithms, as well as applied mathematics topics. According to the most recent Research Excellence Framework, all aspects of the department’s research were recognised as world-leading or internationally excellent, providing students with the opportunity to learn within a highly regarded research environment. Students also participate in personal development workshops designed to support their academic progress and prepare them for future careers. The programme benefits from strong connections with related departments such as Statistics, Finance, Economics, and Management, while maintaining an active role within London’s wider mathematics community. Graduates are well prepared for careers in academia and industry, with opportunities in sectors such as financial services, data science, consulting, and technology. In addition, research students receive annual funding to support research-related activities, including conference attendance and the purchase of books or technology, with further funding available through application.
