MRes Soft Electronic Materials



What will I learn?

Learn how to create and optimise new types of electronic materials and devices for a diverse range of applications on this interdisciplinary course. Deepen your understanding of a thriving area of research, which targets applications such as light-emitting diodes, batteries, wearable electronics devices and sensors. You'll engage with highly multidisciplinary science during your studies. The programme will span physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering and bioengineering. Over 12 months, you'll explore topics including organic and inorganic semiconductors, material synthesis and processing, materials characterisation, and device physics and applications. Research activities are wide-ranging, from modelling molecules and materials, to measuring and analysing materials and device performance for targeted applications. The course is comprised of lectures and advanced skills training, as well as a substantial independent research project and thesis.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree. The minimum requirement is based on the university's selectivity ranking; from the most competitive we look for a minimum cumulative GPA of 3/4 to 3.25/4 or better. From other mainstream universities we look for a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4 or better. Departments may require a higher grade from particular institutions.

For international students

2:1 in a relevant engineering, mathematical or physical sciences subject. Non-STEM degrees and relevant experience through work will also be considered. Students need to have IELTS – Academic (Test-Centre/UKVI SELT/Online) with 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in all elements) for Standard level and 7.0 overall (minimum 6.5 in all elements) for Higher level. TOEFL iBT with 92 overall (minimum 20 in all elements) for Standard and 100 overall (minimum 22 in all elements) for Higher level.
