MSc Medical Science by Research

UK

What will I learn?

The MSc Medical Science by Research is a one-year research programme designed for graduates and medical or dental students who wish to develop advanced research skills and gain first-hand experience of conducting high-quality medical sciences research. This programme provides an opportunity to work alongside experienced researchers and clinical academics while developing the knowledge, practical skills, and critical thinking required for careers in academic medicine, biomedical research, healthcare innovation, and postgraduate study. Students can tailor their studies to their interests by undertaking a substantial research project within one of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences’ areas of expertise. Throughout the programme, you will gain an understanding of contemporary medical sciences research, including study design, data analysis, scientific communication, and the legal, ethical, and regulatory frameworks that underpin research practice. A key feature of the MSc is the extended supervised research project, which enables you to contribute to hypothesis-driven research under the guidance of subject specialists. This immersive experience provides valuable preparation for careers in research, clinical academia, industry, or doctoral study. The programme is available both as a standalone MSc qualification and as an intercalated degree for eligible medical and dental students. In addition to academic supervision, students benefit from dedicated pastoral support throughout their studies.
