What will I learn?

Quantum technologies are set to revolutionise society in many ways: from creating new types of computers to solve very difficult problems, very quickly, to making uncrackable communications systems and sensors that operate beyond conventional limits. The University of Bristol has been pioneering in this worldwide effort for more than 15 years with an approach that uses light and optoelectronic technologies to implement the required devices, circuits and systems. On this programme you will gain a deep understanding of the design, fabrication and use of the next generation of integrated circuits, sub-systems and systems that combine optics, electronics and quantum engineering for applications in communications, computing, sensing and healthcare. You will share units with the Quantum Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training and will be taught within the world-leading Quantum Engineering Technology Labs (QETLabs) and graduate with highly desirable and emerging skills in optoelectronic and quantum information technologies.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants will typically need an upper second-class honours degree or international equivalent in Chemistry, Communications Engineering, Computer Networks, Computer Science and Technologies, Computer Systems Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Information and Communications Technologies, Information Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Microelectronic Engineering, Optical Engineering, Optical Information Science and Technologies, Optoelectronic Information Science and Technologies, Physics, or Telecommunications. Economics and other numerate degrees may be suitable and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applications may still be considered if interim grades are currently slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements and may make you an aspirational offer. This offer would be at the standard level, meaning applicants would need to achieve the standard entry requirements by the end of their degree. Applications may also be considered if the final overall achieved grade is slightly lower than the programme's entry requirement. If an achieved grade is lower than the entry requirements, the application may be more likely to receive an offer if the applicant has additional relevant work experience or qualifications.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
