What will I learn?

This is an exciting opportunity for candidates who would like to complete an MSc by Research in any topic that fits within the broad remit of energy and sustainability for which the expert supervisor/s within the theme are recognised.


This is a 12 month, 100% research programme where you will achieve your MSc degree by developing a desk/laboratory/field based novel research project. Our current research strengths and specialisms of the supervisors in Energy and Sustainability include, but are not limited to:


  • Insurance and risk in the energy transition.
  • Disaster risk reduction and resilience.
  • Smart grid.
  • Whole systems.
  • AI for energy systems.
  • Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).
  • Low-carbon fuels and chemicals.
  • Renewable Energy.
  • Marine Engineering.
  • Energy storage.
  • Waste-to-X and circular resource recovery.
  • Negative emissions technologies.
  • Techno-economic, life cycle, and process modelling for decision support.
  • CFD including of complex multiphase flow.
  • Simulation of wind turbine operation.
  • Materials performance in extreme energy environments.
  • Device materials.
  • Battery cooling systems.
  • Photovoltaic systems including links to electrolysis.
  • Research which ranges from ‘blue skies’ fundamentals through to development in collaboration with industry.
  • Modelling of hydrogen energy systems.
  • Spatio-temporal modelling and analysis of energy systems.
  • Socio-technical systems for a net zero transition.
  • Economics of net zero transition.
  • Energy justice and ethics for net zero.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants should hold a degree within any S.T.E.A.M field (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) or an equivalent international qualification or closely aligned discipline. Ideally, applicants should have suitable organisational experience.

All cases will be reviewed on a 1-2-1 basis and online interviews (via Teams or Skype) will be expected.
