What will I learn?

As genomics revolutionises healthcare, the demand for skilled specialists is increasing. Studying MSc Genomic Medicine at Swansea will provide you with the knowledge and skills to implement and lead genomic advancements across healthcare, pharmaceuticals and the broader biomedical sector.

Our MSc Genomic Medicine is a research-led and practice-focused programme that reflects the increasing use of genomics across healthcare and biomedical science. Our programme has been designed to equip you with the fundamental knowledge and skills to understand and interpret genomic data, to improve patient diagnosis, treatment, and care.

You will receive the latest information on human genetics, genome sequencing, and the application of genomics within clinical practice and medical research, delivered by an academic team of researchers and clinicians who are experts in the field.

MSc Genomic Medicine at Swansea combines theory with practice. You will be equipped with a clear understanding of human genomics, genomic technologies, and the interpretation of genomic data, that you will be able to apply to clinical, diagnostic and research settings.

Throughout this programme, you will develop core knowledge in human genetics, genomic variation, sequencing technologies and genomic data analysis, the foundation of which supports applied study in a range of areas, including:

  • Cancer genomics
  • Infectious disease genomics
  • Rare and common inherited disease
  • Pharmacogenomics

You will address global disparities in genomic datasets, the impact of Eurocentric bias on clinical interpretation, and the importance of representation in genomic research. You will also examine examples from global health and infectious disease genomics, empowering you to recognise how population diversity influences both scientific understanding and clinical decision-making.

MSc Genomic Medicine is taught by academic researchers and clinicans with expertise across the genomic sciences. You will benefit from a range of teaching methods that will enrich your studies, from lectures, workshops and case-based learning to digital bioinformatics training and guest lectures from clinicians and genetic counsellors providing you with flexibility and preserving strong academic and clinical engagement.

Throughout the programme you will also receive insight into the impact of genomic medicine from service user and carer perspectives through service user group representation, enabling you to apply learnt theory to real-world scenarios.
