What will I learn?

This integrated four-year route combines Year 0 of the International Foundation Programme with Warwick's degree in Physics with Astrophysics. The International Foundation Programme provides a strong foundation in the core principles of mathematics, physics, and engineering, helping you to develop the analytical and problem-solving skills needed for success at university and in technical or research-based careers.During Year 0, you will strengthen your understanding of key scientific concepts, learn to apply mathematical and computational methods to real-world challenges, and gain experience using industry-relevant software and modelling techniques. Alongside these technical skills, you will also build your communication, teamwork, and research abilities, which is essential for thriving in both academic and professional environments. By the end of this first year, students will have developed the academic foundations and be well prepared to progress Year 1 of BSc Physics with Astrophysics. On the Physics with Astrophysics (BSc) degree, you will be taught by, mentored by, and work on projects with, our astrophysicists. This course is accredited by the Institute of Physics.Astrophysics has a special flavour. With the arrival of space-based instrumentation and gravitational wave detection, some of the most exciting discoveries in your lifetime are likely to come in astrophysics. We can't conduct experiments on stars or galaxies as they're too far away and too big. Instead, we need to piece together explanations of what we see. This involves understanding the fundamental physics - mechanics, quantum theory, relativity, thermodynamics - and trying to work out what they imply for extra-solar planets, galaxies, stars, and the Universe as a whole. The course covers the principles of physics and their application to explain astrophysical phenomena. In your first year, you will study the classification of astrophysical objects and how we observe them. During the second year, you will study the solar system and stars in some detail. In the third and fourth years, you can study a range of topics including cosmology, exoplanets, the physics of compact objects (black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs), general relativity, and our Sun.
