The Department of Languages, Cultures and Film have specialist researchers and active practitioners in translation across a variety of languages and disciplinary approaches. Translation can be studied as a conventional academic research project and also through a creative-critical pathway that allows you to pursue and reflect on your own translation practice. Our research strengths in translation studies lie in the cultural, historical, transnational and political dimensions of translation, spanning a range of linguistic and geographical contexts. We also have significant expertise in practice-based approaches: our staff have published substantial translations from many languages, covering contemporary and historical texts in a range of literary forms. Our research-active staff and PhD students work on areas including: Global translation theories, with particular interest in gender, queer and postcolonial translation Audio-visual translation TV dubbing and subtitling volunteer and non-professional translation, such as fan-subbing Translation and media sociological approaches to translation translation and journalism translation and the cultural heritage sector Literary translation and creative writing translation and multilingualism Translation and public service interpreting professional practices in the UK.
