Actuaries are professionals who use their strong mathematical and statistical skills and data analysis tools to place a price on risk, from auto theft to cyber-attack. Pricing risk allows insurance companies and financial markets to provide coverage against a variety of loss events, from an autonomous car running a pedestrian to a tree falling on a house, from a spaceship launch failing to a database of sensitive customers information being hacked. The pricing of risk is also essential for governments to successfully provide social welfare programs and insurance protection against catastrophic risks such as flooding. Often ranked as one of the best career paths to pursue, actuary is an excellent job option for mathematics and statistics majors. The number of actuaries is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2023 and 2033, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This strong demand for actuaries makes the MS in Actuarial Science an attractive degree program for someone with strong quantitative skills.
