What will I learn?

Students selecting the Production concentration start with basic level courses in multiple production areas, covering both camera-based and computer-based arts. It is our philosophy that students should be exposed to multiple media forms and systems to challenge perceptions and encourage experimentation. Through these multiple exposures students broaden their horizons and understand that no medium functions in isolation. A student interested in film, for example, may value exposure to digital arts (for special effects or to present their work online) similarly, a student in digital arts will value exposure to video (to incorporate time-based imagery in web or virtual reality projects, for example). Students continue to diversify their skills and interests at the intermediate level, and focus on one area at the advanced level. What will I learn? How do you make a documentary or computer game? How does popular culture affect web design? Does the impact of something change if we binge watch it or experience it in virtual reality? These are the types of questions you can explore in the classrooms, screening rooms and production spaces at UB, in one of the first media study departments in the U.S. You’ll start with intro courses about media, then quickly move into advanced classes in production, theory, history and other topics based on your specific interests.

For international students

If you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school that prepare you to succeed at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale, and we expect applicants to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B, or 83 on a 100-point scale.
