What will I learn?

This BAS program is intended for those wishing to become professional sign language interpreters. The program focuses on language (ASL and English) development and cultural studies for the lower-division portion and interpreting in the upper division portion. Students wishing to learn ASL only and not aspire toward a career in interpreting will still be able to earn an AAS degree in Deaf Studies which will prepare them to continue in other fields such as education, counseling, and social work.Student Learning OutcomesPerform a conversation in American Sign Language at a competency level equivalent to an entry level interpreter.Complete a successful interpretation of a communication transaction between a D/deaf and hearing individual using the methodologies of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.Perform various interpreting tasks which reflect areas of specialization such as Deaf-Blind, Medical, Mental Health, Legal, Educational, Conference, Video Relay/Remote, Theatrical and Religious interpreting.Develop skills and knowledge required for the K-12 setting to pass the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) written test and performance test at a score of 3.0 or better.Appraise and apply the principles and practices of the interpreting profession that are required to pass the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf National Interpreter Certification written test.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students are required to have international qualification equivalent to U.S. High School diploma. English Proficiency Admission Requirements: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 61 iBT; Duolingo: 90.

Application Deadline: Fall - 1st July, Spring - 15th November, Summer Deadline - 15th Apr.
