Students in the Cultural Anthropology concentration focus on contemporary human experiences of culturally distinct communities encountering a rapidly globalizing political economy. Our students acquire robust training in mixed methods, community-based approaches, and applied anthropology. Topically, cultural anthropology faculty investigate issues related to the transformation of individual experience and community relations within the context of economic development, governmental and nongovernmental policy, and environmental change. Increasingly, faculty seek to understand the way subjective and material well-being are impacted by the rapidly changing contexts of modernity. With a concentration in cultural anthology our students acquire theoretical and foundational knowledge in the classroom and acquire practical skills via experiential learning. Our students acquire many transferable skills including strong analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills, the ability to work with complex data sets, unique perspectives on understanding behavior and cultural influences, quantitative and qualitative research skills, and problem-solving abilities. Our cultural anthropology faculty research and teach courses that explore human-environmental interactions, community and economic development, health and well-being, cultural psychiatry and psychological anthropology, disasters and resilience, gender and sexuality, public anthropology, international development, human ecology, anthropology of art and religion, and language and culture.
