At its core, biology is the study of life – human, plant and animal. The Biological Sciences program is ideal for students interested in preparing for careers in health care, agriculture, environmental care, food processing, manufacturing, product development, biotechnology and other related fields. At the undergraduate level, a broad general biology degree is available or students can specialize in cell and molecular biology or ecology. A related degree in microbiology is also housed in the department. Countless hands-on research opportunities are available to build a resume for future work or graduate school. Master’s and doctoral degrees are available at the graduate level.As a biology student at UWM, you will receive a strong foundation in all areas of biology and the natural sciences to prepare you for a career or graduate school. To earn the major, students take required courses and engage in laboratory and/or field research in cell biology, genetics, and ecology. Students also engage in independent research projects and internships with external groups. After the core courses, students take upper-level electives in areas including Molecular Genetics, Neurobiology, Ecology and Evolution, Microbiology, Marine and Freshwater Biology.
