Part of the Critical Languages and International Studies section, our mission is to promote global competence through the study of the language, literature, culture, history, and the political and business climate of Russia and the former Soviet space.Russian is the first language of approximately 150 million people and has long served as a lingua franca for millions in the countries of the former Soviet Union and former Eastern Bloc. Learning Russian opens the door of opportunity for facilitating the learning of other Slavic languages, those spoken by over 300 million people from Eastern and Central Europe to Northern Asia. Russia continues to play a central role in global politics, meaning that there are a wide variety of career opportunities for people with Russian language skills. Likewise, a large number of U.S. companies have well-established business relationships with Russia, and western European firms are even more actively investing in the region.Our innovative curriculum is designed to maximize the success of both language learners and heritage speakers of Russian who grew up with Russian at home. Through experiential learning in language classes, as well as in more advanced courses in literature, culture, linguistics, history, politics, localization and translation, we train our students to be multilingual and intercultural. In addition to linguistic and cultural competence, students gain valuable skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving.
