What is East Asian Languages and Cultures:

The East Asian Languages and Cultures program provides intensive studies in the languages and cultures of East Asia, focusing on China and Japan. China and Japan are the second and third largest economy in the world. Since these two countries are important trading partners with the United States, this major provides comprehensive training for such job markets. The major also provides a strong academic background for students who wish to pursue further academic degrees in Asian Studies or related fields. Graduates have taken jobs in computer software companies, airline companies, the military, educational institutions, and publishing companies.

What are the features of Miami’s program:

Study abroad

The Chinese Program offers a summer intensive program in Tianjin, China. During the 6 weeks in China, students are able to take a maximum of 9 Miami credits in language and culture courses, and travel to Beijing and other interesting places. In addition, many students study abroad in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in programs associated with Miami University.

The Japanese program conducts a study abroad Miami Summer Intensive Japanese Program in Tokyo. It is a 6-week program that offers intensive Japanese Language and travel opportunities in Japan. Further, Miami University has established a dual-degree program with Kansai Gaidai University. Students who spend their junior year in Kansai Gaidai University studying Japanese and Japan-related subjects can earn both Miami University and Kansai Gaidai University credits towards graduation at both institutions.

Personalized curriculum

The program provides intensive study in the languages and cultures of East Asia, focusing on Japan and China. Students who major in EALC choose a concentration from Japan or China. It is advantageous for those studying in one area to possess some knowledge about the other; thus, a student could choose the Japan concentration and minor in Chinese or choose the China concentration and minor in Japanese.

What courses would I take:

Along with Global Miami Plan Foundation courses, you would take language classes in either Chinese or Japanese, depending on your concentration. Other courses like Chinese and Japanese literature and film, Geography of East Asia, Politics of China, and International Relations of East Asia are also offered.

What can I do with this major:

EALC graduates have gone into a wide range of career paths and graduate education, including business, publishing, education, military service, and technology. Recent graduates have taken jobs in computer software companies, airline companies, the military, educational institutions, and publishing companies.

For international students

Completion of formal secondary education in a pre-university curriculum

This education must culminate in the award of a diploma or the issuance of a leaving certificate or matriculation certificate generally recognized as the educational qualification necessary for admission to higher studies.
