UWM Linguistics offers both a major (30 credits) and a minor (18 credits) for undergraduates. There are two tracks within the major: General Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The General track focuses on the core areas of theoretical linguistics (phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics), with ample opportunity to include courses incorporating experimental methods, as well as electives, including advanced foreign language courses. The Applied track also covers the core theoretical areas, but adds a focus on language teaching and pedagogy. Both the major and the minor can be easily combined with other programs of study, such as Psychology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Philosophy, Anthropology, foreign languages, and more.Linguistics offers excellent training and preparation for careers in a wide variety of industries, as well as for graduate study in linguistics and related fields.
