Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (Integrated Teacher Education)

USA

What will I learn?

A National Science Foundation Noyce Grant awardee, the Mathematics, BA Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) major is designed for students interested in teaching mathematics in high school or middle school. The coursework satisfies requirements for a BA in Mathematics and Single Subject Credential - Mathematics (SSC), including 21 units of the Education Specialist Preliminary Teaching Credential: Mild/Moderate Support Needs (ESC). The Mathematics, Integrated Teacher Education Program, BA has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) as an integrated undergraduate teacher preparation program. Students who complete the 4-year BA Math degree will be recommended to the CCTC for a preliminary single subject credential to teach middle school and high school mathematics. Students who complete the ESC requirements for an additional school year after graduation (18 units) will be recommended to the CCTC to receive a preliminary education in mild to moderate services and earn a Master of Arts in Special Education. Those students interested in earning the BA Mathematics, Single Subject Credential in Mathematics, Education Specialist Credential in Mild/Moderate Support Services, and MA in Special Education are strongly encouraged to enroll in the SAGE Mathematics Program, that is, Mathematics, Integrated Teacher Education Program, BA + Single Subject Credential + Education Specialist Credential + Special Education, MA program. Note that this is an accelerated honors program that will allow 12 units of coursework to double count for both the BA and MA degree. Students who opt to do the BA Math ITEP program and MA SPED program separately will not be allowed to double count those units in the stand alone MA SPED degree and will have to take 12 units of substitute courses to fulfill the MA SPED unit requirements. BA Math ITEP students must have completed 80% of math coursework in order to satisfy subject matter competency and engage in solo teaching in middle school or high school math classrooms. Minimum grade point average (GPA) criteria is required to verify subject matter competency and entry to student teaching.
