What will I learn?

The mission of the Music Department is to provide students opportunities to experience a broad spectrum of music from the Western fine art tradition, the many genres of American music, and the music of other cultures. Through the courses and performances offered by the department, students will develop an understanding of artistic expression as an essential part of life and learn skills essential to musicians today.

Students may choose a major or minor with a concentration in performance, history, or theory/e department has a unique relationship with the total educational experience in that students majoring in other areas are invited and encouraged to participate in all classes, ensembles, and applied lessons. Students are given the opportunity to initiate and/or continue development of their musical interests and talents.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Music Department will:

  • acquire a foundation in music theory, history, and literature and performance;
  • learn to appreciate a broad spectrum of musics from the Western art tradition, musics from the United States, and the music of diverse cultures;
  • initiate and/or continue development of musical interests and talents;
  • learn skills essential to musicians today and value artistic expression as an essential part of life;
  • be knowledgeable about the connection among musical expression, lifelong learning and personal growth; and/or
  • gain acceptance into appropriate graduate programs.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students must have official high school transcripts.

TOEFL - 80 iBT or higher, 550 pBT or higher; IELTS - 6.5 overall band score or higher; SAT - 460 or higher on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT; ACT - 19 or higher on the English section of the ACT; ELS - Satisfactory completion of ELS 112; Duolingo English Test 105 or higher; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - Advanced score of 176 or higher; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) Score of 53 or higher.
