The Music Technology and Commercial Music program at the University of Central Missouri (UCM) offers a dynamic and flexible curriculum designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers in the contemporary music industry. The program encourages students to individualize their course of study to align with their artistic interests and professional aspirations, fostering both creative expression and technical proficiency. Students can choose to focus on Jazz and Commercial music, receiving in-depth instruction in areas such as jazz performance and composition, and teaching across a diverse range of contemporary styles. The curriculum integrates theoretical study with applied practice, offering courses in jazz improvisation, arranging, composition, and the history of jazz and commercial music. Performance is a central component of this focus. Students participate in ensembles such as the UCM Jazz Big Band Ensembles and the Jazz and Rock Combos, gaining valuable experience in both large and small group settings. These ensembles provide opportunities for artistic growth through performance, collaboration, and the study of significant works from the jazz and commercial music repertoire. In addition to on-campus performances, students have the opportunity to perform at prestigious venues throughout the Kansas City area, including the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
